About Mr. Philo
Mr. John Philo became superintendent of Grandville Public Schools in July 2026. A dedicated educator and leader, he brings more than two decades of experience serving Grandville students, staff and families.
Mr. Philo joined Grandville Public Schools in 2003 as a seventh-grade science teacher after beginning his career as an alternative high school teacher in Kelloggsville Public Schools. During his time in Grandville, he served as principal of Grandville Middle School, principal of Grandville High School and assistant superintendent for human resources before being selected as superintendent. In his previous district leadership role, he oversaw human resources, personnel management, contract negotiations, staff evaluations, district compliance and employee development while supporting districtwide initiatives. Throughout his career, he has championed data-informed instruction, collaborative Professional Learning Communities and thoughtful curriculum development to help every student reach their full potential.
Mr. Philo earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Grand Valley State University and a Bachelor of Science in education from Aquinas College. He also earned a Master of Arts in educational leadership and an Education Specialist degree in education leadership from Grand Valley State University.
As superintendent, Mr. Philo is committed to building on Grandville Public Schools' tradition of excellence through strong relationships, high expectations and a student-centered approach. He works closely with the Board of Education, staff, families and the community to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment.
Having spent more than 20 years serving the district in a variety of roles, Mr. Philo considers Grandville more than a workplace. As he shared when he was named superintendent, "Grandville Public Schools is embedded into my fabric." That deep connection continues to guide his commitment to students, staff, families and the community.
