Safety and Security

shield iconThe Grandville Public Schools Safety and Security Department supports safe, welcoming learning environments through preparation, clear communication and collaboration with staff, families and community partners. Our district uses nationally recognized safety frameworks, including the Standard Response Protocol developed by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, which provides consistent safety language used by schools and first responders across Kent ISD.

The resources below provide an overview of the safety language and practices you may hear during drills, training exercises or everyday school operations.

Understanding Safety Language

The Standard Response Protocol uses five clear actions to help students and staff understand expectations quickly:

Hold — hallways remain clear, such as during a medical situation.
Secure — exterior doors are locked due to something outside the building.
Lockdown — used when there is a potential threat inside or nearby.
Evacuate — move to a safer location.
Shelter — protection during severe weather or environmental conditions.

Visit the I Love U Guys website below to learn more about the protocol used in our schools.

Standard Reunification Method Overview

The videos below, created by Kent ISD, provide a brief overview of the reunification practices used in Grandville Public Schools and across local districts. Reunification is a structured process designed to safely reconnect students with families when situations require a coordinated dismissal process, such as when a building must be evacuated or cannot be used due to facility or utility issues.

Students will only be released to approved adults listed in school records, and identification will be required. Information about reunification locations and procedures will be shared through official school communication channels. While the process may take time, it is designed to ensure every student is released safely and accurately.

Our goal is simple: to support safe, welcoming learning environments where students and staff can focus on learning every day.

How Families Can Help

Families play an important role in supporting clear communication during safety situations. Helpful steps include:

• Watch for updates through school phone calls, emails and text messages.

• Follow guidance shared by the school regarding arrival or reunification locations.

• Refrain from coming to campus unless directed, as this can interfere with operations.

• Avoid sharing unverified information on social media.

Keep your contact information current, including emergency contacts.
