Dear Grandville Public Schools Family:
Throughout the day, we have worked with the Grandville Police Department to investigate the credibility of the OK 2 Say report we received last night. Grandville PD learned that an identical report was received by two other school districts in the state within the last 24 hours. In addition, since we received our OK 2 Say report, other local school districts are receiving similar reports. There is also a screenshot picture that is circulating that details a three step “attack” on schools which includes using a fire alarm as a means to get students and staff outside of the building. That picture originated in Arizona and was found to be not a credible threat by the police department in that school district. Based on the investigation in Grandville and investigations in other communities where this report has been made, this most recent report is not a credible threat to our school community.
It is also important to note that the school’s response to fire alarms has changed slightly in the past several years. All staff are trained in ALICE safety protocols. Our ALICE training emphasizes the need to analyze each situation and make safety decisions based on the information at hand. For example, in the case of a fire alarm, the first step is to determine if there is a fire, is it close to me or my classroom, and what action to take. If no fire or smoke is visible, students and staff should wait for further instruction from their building leaders who have the ability to see where the alarm originated and evaluate the need for evacuation.
The safety of our school community is always our highest priority. The decision to close school is not done lightly. We will always err on the side of caution to investigate the credibility of any threat to our schools. We are grateful for the tireless work and continued partnership with the Grandville Police Department.
As we return to school tomorrow (Friday, September 20, 2024), we will have additional staff on hand at our buildings to help in any way they can.
Sincerely,
Roger Bearup
Grandville Superintendent
