Band director Maureen Ross speaks about the challenges of old school-owned instruments and how replacing them would help K-12 music students if Proposal 1 passes.

Hi, I'm Maureen Ross, one of the band directors in Grandville and I'd like to talk to you about how the upcoming bond vote would affect the music programs in Grandville Public Schools. In our band program in it is necessary for us to have instruments for both concert and marching band. When you see the band at a parade or football game, many of the instruments you see are older than the high school students who play them. In both the middle school and high school we have many older tubas, baritones, horns, bassoons, low saxophones and bass clarinets and it will help our students if those instruments are replaced. The orchestra program also needs new instruments. At the middle school we are still using many instruments that were purchased when the program started in 2001. With constant use, as well as the temperature fluctuations in our non-air-conditioned rooms, it is difficult to keep these instruments in good working condition. Our high school orchestra provides cellos and basses to the students because these instruments are expensive. Many of those instruments our students play are more than thirteen years old. Because these instruments are made of wood they are also subject to the problems that can come with temperature fluctuations. Our awesome elementary music programs also need instruments. The teachers would like to provide more instruction on ORFF instruments and with seven elementary schools each building requires their own set. In order to keep providing first class music education for the students in Grandville, we need new instruments, and the ones I mentioned are just a few of the things required to help our students to succeed. Nothing is more frustrating to a student than to have an instrument that constantly breaks. Broken instruments mean students miss out on learning. In order to keep providing a first-class music education for the students in Grandville we need new instruments, and the ones that I mentioned are just a few of the things that we need. Nothing's more frustrating for a student to come to school and not be able to play because the instrument doesn't work, or it's old, or it's broken. On behalf of the music teachers and music students of Grandville Public Schools, we hope that you'll consider all of these things when you vote on November 5th.
