Dear Parents and Guardians:

Yesterday, we were made aware of a disappointing social media post showing students demonstrating behavior in a deplorable, racially insensitive way. After investigating this, we found that the incident did not happen during the school day or on school property. A few of the students do attend Grandville High School.

During school or outside of school, on school grounds or not, the behaviors exhibited are never OK! We are working through this incident both with the students involved and with our student population as a whole.

On our school campuses and within our school walls, we will never tolerate any racial injustice or social injustice of any kind. When situations happen outside of school time and place, we will operate within our legal jurisdiction to work with those involved and those impacted by their actions. Again, this type of act is never appropriate.

Grandville Public Schools has been involved in substantial training in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our entire Administrative Team participated in a year-long training last year and from the training established district goals, including the assembly of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team to ensure the goals are put into action. These goals do include comprehensive training for employees and support staff and opportunities for students to learn and grow. I tell you this to inform, not to say we have this figured out. We do not. We need to continue to learn and grow together and we will.

We appreciate your time and thank you for your continued partnership.

Educationally,
Roger Bearup
